4 Cool Weather Craft Cocktails for Bourbon Lovers

Hosting a Holiday shindig and looking for a signature spirit to serve? I’ve got you covered with four inspired Bourbon based recipes that are designed to impress. I personally tried all these recipes and they were so fun to create. I included a few helpful notes as well. Read on to discover your next go-to cocktail.

Bourbon Cider

1 part Maker’s Mark® Bourbon

1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon sugar

2 dashes Angostura® Bitters

3 parts dry hard cider

Maraschino cherry, for garnish

Orange slice, for garnish

Directions: 

In a champagne glass, stir together the sugar and the bitters until the sugar dissolves. Add Maker’s Mark® Bourbon. Top with cold cider. Garnish with a cherry and slice of orange. The dry apple flavor in the cider pairs perfectly with the Maker’s Mark® Bourbon and bitters. This easy-drinking cocktail goes with almost anything.

Amy’s Notes: 

Simple sugar would have been easier in my opinion than trying to get the sugar to dissolve. For that matter, this drink is fairly sweet. I think it would be great with less sugar rather than more.

Campfire

1 part Maker’s 46® Bourbon

1 part Averna Amaro

1 part Stumptown Indo

pinch of Maldon Salt

pinch of chilly powder

Directions: 

In a shaker, add all ingredients, add ice, and shake vigorously. Pour entire contents into an Old Fashioned glass. Add lemon zest, discard lemon peel. Add chocolate bitters to top of frothy cocktail. Garnish with marshmallows.

Amy Notes: 

I tried one grocery store and two liquor stores and could not find the Averno Amaro or Stumptown Indo. Instead I used two parts coffee liqueur and it worked just fine.

Baked Apple 46

2 parts Maker’s 46

½ part Apple Brandy

¼ part Cinnamon Syrup

2 Dashes Baked Apple Bitters

Smoked Cinnamon Stick, to garnish

Lemon Twist, to garnish

Directions:

Fill rocks glass with ice and set aside. Combine Maker’s 46, Apple Brandy, Cinnamon Syrup and Apple Bitters into a mixing glass. Fill with ice and stir for 10 seconds. Empty out rocks glass with ice. Take a lighter and heat the end of the cinnamon stick. When it start to smoke rim it around the inside of the glass. Strain into the rocks glass with a 2 inch ice cube. Zest a lemon twist and put it inside.

Amy’s Notes:

I did not have cinnamon syrup so I just took simple syrup which I made (equal parts water to sugar- shake vigorously), and added cinnamon.

Gingerbread Toddy

2 parts Maker’s Mark Bourbon
1 part Gingerbread syrup*
1/3 -1/2 part hot water
A squeeze of lemon

*Gingerbread Syrup:

1 part dark brown sugar
1 part water
1 Tablespoon molasses
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice

Combine all the syrup ingredients in a pan. Heat to boiling on a stovetop while whisking until all the powdery substances dissolve. Boil for 2-3 minutes so that the syrup thickens slightly.

Directions:

Combine bourbon and syrup in a mug. Fill to the top with hot water. Add a few drops of lemon juice and stir. Enjoy!

Amy’s Notes: 

I didn’t have the patience to make gingerbread syrup and couldn’t find it in stores. Instead I took the simple syrup again and added cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg to taste. This was my first Hot Toddy and it was so fun. Perfect for outdoor entertaining or for cozying up with a good book.

I hope you enjoy these recipes. I find it easy to get lost in all the little ingredients, but remember, these recipes are up to personal translation. Do what works for you and have fun!
