The Mediterranean meets the Old South – Wednesday Review
While traveling I love discovering new gems. None have been more surprising, and delightful than the Ocean Lodge in St. Simons Island
Old World Italy meets the Old South

Driving through southern low country, one would never expect to find what looks like a virtual Florentine Castle nestled between the stately oaks and sparkling waters of the Golden Isles. After my visit this past May, I have put together my:

Top 5 reasons to visit Ocean Lodge
St Simons Island

From Low Country Marshes to Sparkling Coastline, the Golden Isles are Breathtaking.
1. Award Winning Southern Hospitality at its Finest
Winning Trip Advisor’s Travelers Choice award and the Certificate of Excellence in 2012, put this Boutique destination in the running with some of the top nationally known resorts.

Upon arrival you are catered to by an impressive staff offering impeccable service from check in, to a cooked to order breakfast. In the intimate setting, virtually anywhere you go you are known by name giving you the feeling you’ve escaped to your home away from home. The biggest impression I got from the staff was their genuine happiness. Multiple times, I heard from the staff how happy they were to work at the Ocean Lodge and what a wonderful workplace it was. This to me, has become the ultimate test of a worthy destination. If the staff doesn’t want to leave, why would I
The Ocean Lodge is full of decor with interesting stories. Make sure you ask about the murals and lions.
2. Every Room is a Suite
To say there is “not a bad seat in the house” is an understatement. Every room at Ocean Lodge is a Suite. Beyond the bedroom you’ll find luxuriously appointed living space, kitchen, and private veranda where, should you choose you can have your meals brought to you to enjoy in complete privacy.

3. The Ultimate Romantic Getaway

Guests are invited to take advantage of their couples massage, and fitness classes, or relax by the pool. Whatever you decide Ocean Lodge is the ultimate romantic getaway. They even offer tours by air and sea for those of you looking for the best views of the Isles.

4. Destination Sublime
Ocean Lodge makes the perfect destination for weddings, reunions, showers, or business meetings. However, if you are looking to do some exploring, St. Simons Island and the other Golden Isles offer plenty to investigate, right out the front door. St. Simons Island includes an operating lighthouse you can actually walk up, a fantastic fishing pier, and a charming pier village with boutiques and restaurants to browse and enjoy. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the pristine and widely acclaimed Golf Courses within reach as well as the miles of bike paths that wind through the historic landmarks. Believe me, you wont be bored should you decide to venture into the shade of the spanish moss as there is so much to enjoy

5. The Rooftop Restaurant
The crowning gem of Ocean Lodge is without doubt it’s Rooftop Restaurant. A raving success in its own right, the Rooftop Restaurant is a local favorite and must visit for guests of the Lodge. Dine in the open air with a view of the ocean, or sit inside and lounge by the bar. As guests of the Lodge you can also eat on your veranda as mentioned above.
As a guest of Ocean Lodge you can enjoy your dinner from the Rooftop on your private veranda.
I had the chance to sit and chat with Executive Chef Josh Kent and was pleased to learn about his commitment to local, sustainable fare. Everything you taste at the Rooftop is seasonal, fresh, and at its peak. It comes as no surprise that the Rooftop Restaurant’s coastal, southern fare was also awarded by Trip Advisor readers.
